Unfortunately. <\/p>\n\n<p>We often hear the same thing from our clients: how do I choose speakers, an amplifier, and a subwoofer? Should I keep the stock stereo or do I need to replace it? Why do I even need a processor? Where can I listen? How can I compare? Where can I install it to avoid having to redo it later? Who should I trust? Who will definitely do a good job? How can I be sure that what you&#8217;re suggesting will sound exactly the way I like it in my car? Everyone says different things\u2014what&#8217;s the truth?          <\/p>\n\n<p>So many questions, and usually no answers. The vast majority of people buy sound that feels like a pig in a poke. Some installers let customers listen to their cars, often built with top-of-the-line components, but then offer the client equipment that&#8217;s orders of magnitude lower in class. And often, the client is disappointed with the result.    <\/p>\n\n<p>For the owner of a Nissan X-Trail, the history of sound in his car lasted 2 years.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-zvuk-electrosila-11-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101150145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-zvuk-electrosila-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-zvuk-electrosila-11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-zvuk-electrosila-11.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>For us, this story began a year ago, when the owner of a Nissan X-Trail called and said he&#8217;d like us to tune the sound. We asked what was already installed in his car. He explained that the source was a top-of-the-line Alpine multimedia system with a built-in processor. Hertz MLK 1650.3 speakers were installed in the front in the factory locations, while the factory speakers from the radio were left in the rear. An Alpine subwoofer was in the trunk, and all of this was driven by an Alpine D-Class amplifier from a not-so-low-end line.    <\/p>\n\n<p>We were a little surprised to hear such a list of equipment \u2013 \u200b\u200bwith such components, the sound should be absolutely mind-blowing! But we asked them to come to us. And they had to come from Zhytomyr. Nevertheless. Once we had the car, it became clear why the Nissan X-Trail owner was dissatisfied with the sound. The sound was, to put it mildly, atrocious! It was difficult to pinpoint the problem \u2013 we had to disassemble the car, examine the wires, how everything was connected, and so on. But the main thing was clear \u2013 a processor, full channel amplification, and high-quality tuning were absolutely essential. Usually, this guarantees a good result.       <\/p>\n\n<p>We decided to listen to our car, which has a similar Hertz Mille Legend system, but with a processor. We offered to listen to the car, and the client heard the difference. And then, it was a blur. We tried to remember why we&#8217;d disappeared from each other&#8217;s sight, why we didn&#8217;t add a processor to the system right away, why we didn&#8217;t disassemble the car&#8230; It doesn&#8217;t matter now. What matters is the end result.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Our client disappeared for a year, then reappeared a year later with a Focal ES 165K2 system instead of the Hertz, with new cables (it turned out the Mille Legend was connected to Mystery aluminum cables, while the amplifier was connected to budget Kicx power and interconnect cables&#8230; no comment). With a new subwoofer.  <\/p>\n\n<p>But what did we hear, given all the changes? We didn&#8217;t hear any significant, dramatic changes. The sound acquired the characteristic Focal coloring, the highs became clearer and brighter, but overall, the sound was still unremarkable&#8230;  <\/p>\n\n<p>What did we propose and what did we do?<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n<li>They suggested adding a midrange speaker. Instead of the tweeters in the standard location in the dashboard under the windshield, we decided to install Audison AP2 midrange speakers (they were a perfect fit). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They decided to move the tweeters to the stands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most important thing was the addition of a processor. In this case, it&#8217;s a two-in-one device\u2014an Audison AP 4.9 bit\u2014a processor with a built-in four-channel amplifier. Four channels from this amplifier were fed to the midrange and high frequencies. A copper speaker cable was run to the midrange and high frequencies.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sound insulation of the front doors has been redone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We soundproofed the rear doors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Added Hertz MPX 165.3 speakers to the rear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We&#8217;ve improved the overall installation (see the spacers under the front speakers &#8211; how it was and how it looks now)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We tuned the processor using the professional Audison Bit Tune software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We had a battle between two speaker systems: the Focal ES 165K2 and the Hertz MLK 1650.3. Who won? Read the rest of the article.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One thing remains to be done: we need to make podiums for the tweeters in the stands. Due to the quarantine, this has been postponed. The tweeters have been temporarily installed in the stands using a simple method. The system will have to be reconfigured in the future.   <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>So, we started working in several directions simultaneously &#8211; with preparation for installation and connection of the processor with the Audison AP 4.9 bit amplifier (pulling and laying wires, connecting a new power distributor), preparation (essentially reworking) of the front doors for midbass speakers, preparation for installation of the Audison AP2 midbass speakers in the standard place in the dashboard.<\/p>\n\n<p>The front doors were poorly prepared for the top-end premium speakers. The speaker spacers were homemade, of varying thickness and angles on each side. We fixed that. <\/p>\n\n<p>How it was:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" spacer rings (for the Nissan X-Trail we used CARAV 14-007), we achieved this beauty:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" finished (the vibration damping was not rolled in, the door panel was not finished at all), we practically re-sound-treated the doors.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images could tear off the metal with our hands. It&#8217;s fitting that we also recommended adding this component to this Nissan X-Trail. <\/p>\n\n<p>Incidentally, during the setup process, we conducted another experiment\u2014we decided to listen to the system in a real car, listening to how it sounded with and without midrange. Essentially, we compared the sound of a system with a two-component front-end and a system with a three-component front-end. For this experiment, we made two settings in the processor, with crossover cutoffs and configurations for each option. The result was expected: with a three-component front-end, we always get a beautiful, harmonious soundstage, amazing vocals, and overall balance. With a two-component front-end, the highs took center stage, the vocals sounded choked, and even the midbass seemed to be relegated to a different level. This is a set from the entry-level Hertz Mille line, and they&#8217;re usually ideal for rear speakers. We&#8217;re often asked whether adding rear speakers is necessary. We always answer that, if you can afford it, it&#8217;s better to have a rear speaker than not. Why did we decide to use this particular device in this car? And not our beloved Forza or a separate processor? Because the Nissan X-Trail already had two amplifiers installed. One was a monoblock for the subwoofer, and the other was a four-channel Alpine amplifier that drove a two-channel front speaker system (at the time, the Focal ES 165K2). We added midrange and rear speakers, which meant we needed four additional channels. We used four channels of the Audison AP 4.9-bit for the midrange and high frequencies, and the four-channel amplifier that was installed before was used for the front midbass and rear speakers.      <\/p>\n\n<p>As a result, we got the following configuration in the processor:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-electrosila-zvuk-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101150161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-electrosila-zvuk-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-electrosila-zvuk-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nissan-xtrail-electrosila-zvuk.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Full channel amplification for the three-component front, coaxial rear and subwoofer. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Why do we love two-in-one solutions, where the processor and amplifier are housed in a single enclosure? It&#8217;s always faster to install, requires fewer wires and audio accessories, eliminates the need to find additional space for multiple amplifiers, and the sound is always excellent! These solutions are ideal for those who want high-quality sound in their car without changing the interior.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Both amplifiers that were previously installed were located in the trunk recess, and we added our processor there as well. We did it in the standard mode (Audison Bit Tune was traditionally acting up, but we got used to it and convinced it to work for the good cause).  <\/p>\n\n<p>We extracted the signal from an Alpine radio\u2014we haven&#8217;t seen such a smooth frequency response in a long time. While it certainly makes sense to replace the stock radio with a decent brand-name unit, don&#8217;t expect its built-in DSP processor to improve the sound at all! So, as a sound source, this radio is fine, but as a tool for more ambitious goals, it&#8217;s not. After final assembly and setup, we first left the Focal speakers in place and listened to the system. Both the team and, most importantly, the Nissan owner himself listened. Then, without changing the settings, we installed the Hertz speakers instead of the Focal speakers. And everyone listened again. On the same tracks with the same recording.      <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hertz-vs-focal-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101150176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hertz-vs-focal-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hertz-vs-focal-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/electrosila.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hertz-vs-focal.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Opinions differed, but by a majority vote, and most importantly, by the most important voice of the car owner, the Hertz Mille Legend sounded better in this system!<\/p>\n\n<p>The Hertz won me over with its natural, colorless sound and versatility\u2014it can handle any genre, and the midbass is amazing! \u2764 Rich, punchy, and resilient.
