A full-range speaker as an alternative to a tweeter?
A full-range speaker instead of a tweeter? Let’s look at the benefits using the Audi A6 as an example. Full-range speakers are quite rare in standard audio systems. They are usually used in high-quality premium car audio systems. However, there is a simple and affordable way to improve the factory sound of a car.
Not all cars can accommodate a larger-diameter speaker due to limitations associated with standard locations. However, there are models in which the manufacturer has successfully placed tweeters – for example, under the windshield in the dashboard. We always strive to use such locations to improve the quality of car audio. Similar competent placement of speakers can be seen in Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Audi, Nissan and other brands.
Full-range speaker instead of tweeter?
In the image below you can see two speakers: one is a standard Audi tweeter, and the other is a wide-range speaker from the Italian brand PHD. Upon closer inspection of both speakers, it becomes obvious that the shape of the spacer in which the speaker is installed is identical for both options – both the factory version and the one made in our car audio studio.

The image below shows that there is enough space in the Audi dashboard to install the new full-range speaker. The speaker is secured to standard mounting points, which does not interfere with the functionality of the car and its audio system.
What are the benefits of a full range speaker?
- The sound stage is significantly improved – it seems as if the music is being played exclusively for the driver.
- The sound stage is expanded – important frequencies responsible for vocals and instruments (winds and strings) are reproduced naturally and fully.
- The midbass is unloaded, since the wideband speaker takes over the mid frequencies, which allows the midbass to sound as intended.

Nuances of installing broadband speakers
The nuances of installing broadband speakers are in several points. First, you need to make sure that the new speaker has enough space in the dashboard. In the place where the factory tweeters were dismantled. And it is also important to remember that for reliable installation you will need to make custom spacers. For this, we use plastic blanks, as well as the right tool.
It is also important to make sure that the new speaker does not touch the mesh with its diffuser during operation. We have encountered this problem sometimes. This mainly concerns midbass speakers, but sometimes you can get into an unpleasant situation with a wide-range speaker.
