Replacing speakers in a car
Replacing car speakers – is it a necessity or entertainment? Not always do car owners order a full upgrade of the audio system. Often, improving the sound begins with a simple replacement of the speakers. However, when it comes to high-quality sound, it would be incorrect to call such a replacement simple. Because this process is not just about dismantling the factory acoustics and screwing on a new one, it is not a one-step story, but a complex of works. We will tell you about this in more detail.
Each modern car has its own unique design, and this applies not only to what is visible from the outside, but also to what is hidden under the door panels. Each car has unique mounting places, into which it is impossible to install acoustics of a universal shape and size without spacer rings, for example.
STAGES OF REPLACING SPEAKERS IN A CAR
What do we mean by speaker replacement and what actions are included in this service:
- Dismantling the doors and door pillars/upper part of the dashboard. The doors usually have standard midbass speakers installed – they often require spacers under the speakers. And depending on the factory location, we dismantle the tweeters from the side pillars or from under the windshield in the dashboard area. Sometimes the factory system has three bands, which means six speakers in front – then we find where the midrange speakers are installed and dismantle them too.
- We do audio preparation of doors or, more simply, noise insulation of doors. Usually we use two layers of vibration insulation and a layer of noise absorber. This stage is not so much for the driver’s comfort, but for the correct operation of the midbass in the door and acoustic comfort.
- We select spacer rings for midbass speakers and mount them. For tweeters, we often make spacers manually directly for the installation site.
- We install all the speakers in the prepared places, assemble and return the car to its original appearance. We listen and enjoy the new sound.

Replacing car speakers is the most popular service in our car audio studio in Kyiv. We have a huge experience, counting hundreds of different brands and models of cars that come to us from different parts of Ukraine – cars from Odessa, Kharkov, Poltava, Dnepr, Zhitomir, Vinnitsa, Kherson and other cities have visited our box.
What size speakers do we install most often? Much depends on the brand of the car, but the most common size of acoustics is 165 mm in diameter. Most cars install speakers of exactly 16 cm. However, if it is a Toyota, then there are often 6×9 inch oval-shaped midbass speakers in the front doors, but in the rear you will find the same 16 cm. And if it is a BMW, then 10 cm speakers will be installed in the front doors. In Audi and Mazda, for example, you can find 20-centimeter midbass speakers in the front doors. So, as you can see, there are a lot of options even in terms of acoustics size. Add their characteristics, tonality, design features and the choice of speakers even for a simple replacement – what a challenge!
