Custom tweeter podiums for the Toyota Land Cruiser 200
Last year, we completed a project to improve the car audio in a Toyota Land Cruiser 200. The major drawback back then was the installation of tweeters. The tweeters were excellent in quality, but the way we positioned them wasn’t the best solution.
The problem was that the factory tweeters were installed in the dashboard, meaning the stock system only had two components. We decided to expand the system and add a midrange speaker up front. So, the midrange speaker took the place of the stock tweeter, leaving no room for an aftermarket tweeter. There was no time and no budget for making podiums at the time. So, we settled on a compromise.
It’s good that after some time, we’re now ready to manufacture tweeter stands as quickly as possible. We want to make them so the rotation angle is more correct and listener-friendly.
We took measurements and 3D-printed plastic tweeter stands with the correct speaker angle. We completed the entire process ourselves.
Now the Blam tweeters are facing the driver, and this is much better for the sound picture and overall music perception.
The final stage of the project was a complete reconfiguration of the audio system’s processor. After repositioning the tweeters, the entire system began to sound different, so the previous settings no longer fully exploited its potential. We re-adjusted the time delays, adjusted the crossover frequencies, and thoroughly reworked the equalization for the new speaker position.
It was during the fine-tuning process that the system achieved its distinctive, mature sound. Music became more focused, instruments were more precisely localized in space, and vocals came forward and acquired a more natural quality. The result was not just loud and high-quality sound, but a truly comfortable and emotional experience that you’ll want to listen to every day, regardless of genre.
Projects like these once again confirm that there are no trivial details in car audio. Sometimes, even a slight change in component placement and a well-tuned processor can take the system to a whole new level.
