To be honest, it took us three whole days to complete this job, and this is not due to our slowness, but to the fact that replacing the standard radio with a new one in a 2010 Lexus GX 460 turned out to be a more difficult task than expected.
The customer wanted to equip the car with modern functions such as CarPlay, Internet access, and install a high-quality, large-sized screen. In addition, the owner of the Lexus GX 460 wanted to upgrade the standard all-round view cameras. At first, we offered to install a transition frame for a 10-inch radio and add a non-native all-round view with 3D function. However, when the equipment kit was delivered, we encountered a problem with the wiring incompatibility. Then we ordered another wiring kit, but in this case, there were also problems with the CAN-Bus compatibility.
Ultimately, the decision was made to order a device with a 12.3-inch screen, which perfectly matches the standard installation and functions correctly.
What was implemented and preserved?
- A 12.3-inch screen is installed.
- Wireless CarPlay has been implemented.
- It is possible to access the Internet via the radio.
- The factory all-round view is retained, switching cameras is done in the same way as before replacing the radio – using the buttons on the steering wheel.
- The standard CD player continues to function.
- The standard menu with car settings is now controlled from the screen of the new radio.
- Climate control is also displayed on the screen of the new radio.
The nuance is that to install this car radio in a Lexus GX 460, you need to disassemble the standard (factory) radio and leave part of it in the car.
The customer’s request for a surround view system was not fulfilled. However, in our opinion, installing a new radio that supports factory cameras and displays the image on a new monitor similar to the factory one is a more attractive solution. This is because there is no need to replace the cameras, which are perfectly integrated into the car’s design.
