The BMW G05 is back, but why?

We already have a project in our portfolio where we improved the sound for a BMW X5 G05 from another city. It seemed like we achieved excellent sound there; what more could you want?

The owner was so tired of the pandemic and the whole COVID thing that he told us he just wanted to treat himself to some good emotions. For him, emotions are inextricably linked to good, beloved music. So, he decided to make what was already good even better.

So, here’s what we’ve tweaked this BMW X5 G05 to make its already-good audio system an order of magnitude better. Let’s get started!

So what did the owner of the BMW X5 G05 decide to improve, and what did we suggest to achieve this?

  1. Improve the quality of the front speakers. The original version featured a decent Blam Signature speaker system, but it could have been even better! Everyone generally liked the Blam, and for BMW, there were practically no other brands offering decent top-end speakers (at least in Ukraine at the time). We chose the top-of-the-line Blam Multix system.
  2. Improve the quality of the rear speakers. The decision was made to replace the most basic Blam Relax line for BMW with a kit that worked for the front. The coaxial speakers needed to be replaced with a two-piece system, which required installing tweeters in the rear doors, so the owner purchased door handles from a more expensive trim level with a Hi-Fi audio system.
  3. I wanted to add deeper bass. We’ve always said that a full-fledged subwoofer is essential for sound quality, but many people don’t believe us and want to experiment. Ultimately, the owner decided to add a subwoofer to his BMW G05. It’s a good thing we’d thought about adding a subwoofer in the future during his previous visit and left room in the fender for an additional amplifier and the enclosure itself. Space in this car is critically limited if you want a new sound without modifications.

Based on all of the above, we have formed the following new components:

  1. The front door speakers are component-based: a separate Blam MS3 broadband speaker and a separate Blam TSM 25 MG45 tweeter (let me remind you that in the BMW G05 audio system, we implemented full channel amplification using an Audison AP F8.9 processor amplifier).
  2. The subwoofer will be installed as a concealed unit in the rear fender. We had a pre-made enclosure, custom-made for the G05. We chose our favorite speaker—the compact, musical, and bass-heavy Focal 25 FSE subwoofer—and a Ground Zero Mini Two miniamp will handle the amplification.

The hardware is all clear. Let’s take a quick look at the process. First, we replaced the front speakers and installed the Blam Multix speakers in place of the Blam Signature. Everything, of course, was in its original locations.

Blam MS3 full-range speakers in spacer rings that completely replicate the shape of the factory speakers:

The tweeters were installed in the corners of the side mirrors. Despite the Blam Multix tweeters being significantly larger in diameter (25 mm versus the 20 mm previously installed), the factory concealed installation was successful.

We reinstalled the front door kit in the rear doors. The center speakers are standard, but the tweeters weren’t included in the standard BMW X5 G05 audio system, and we needed a factory-fitted location for the tweeters. We used handles from a higher-end model, and this is what we ended up with (before and after photos):

As a result, the rear doors look more presentable, but the main thing is that real Music is hidden under the door panels!

The subwoofer section was also well-done. We left enough space from the previous installation for a GZ amplifier (which was what we had originally planned, in case the G05 owner decided he needed a subwoofer).

We disassembled the trunk again. Before installing the GZ Mini Two, everything looked quite compact:

We will install a new amplifier on top of the Audison processor on a podium made by our craftsmen.

You can appreciate how compact both amplifiers are – there’s still plenty of room left for a subwoofer:

And the most important thing, the reason for the entire redesign, is the subwoofer. This car already has two 20-centimeter underseat bass speakers, and they produce decent bass, but they can’t deliver full, deep, and clear low frequencies. Only a full-fledged subwoofer can do that.

The subwoofer enclosure, as I mentioned above, was already in stock. It was made specifically for the BMW X5 G05 and was just waiting for its owner. And it finally arrived.

We had to fabricate a protective grille for the subwoofer, one that looked like a factory-installed interior element. I think our craftsmen did a fantastic job:

The final result of what the trunk of the BMW X5 G05 looks like:

By the way, we prepared the trunk for a new powerful subwoofer and made vibration insulation with high-quality multi-layer material Shumoff Mix F Special Edition

To complete the project, we reconfigured the audio system and tuned the processor. The car sounded brighter, louder, and more musical. The Blam Multix speakers, especially the tweeter, were so crystal clear, so detailed—it was breathtaking! The improved rear speakers added dimension to the overall sound, and the subwoofer… The subwoofer showed just how flat the sound in a car can be without deep bass.

So, all the steps the owner took to improve the sound in his BMW X5 G05 have paid off handsomely. It was good, but now it’s amazing!
